Week 37, Tuesday, Diet with Dianna

Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Ephesians 3:17-19

I've lost one more pound this week! Whew! I am really working hard for this; but it is so worth it!!!!  I love my new healthier lifestyle! Um....confession...I am starting to really enjoy exercising...Yes! I said it, publicly...I enjoy the physical exercise. It is a pleasant feeling to get energized from good physical workouts (and the private kind, too).

Almonds Are Awesome!

One thing's certain--these crunchy little nuggets should be a part of every healthy diet. The snack aisle offers numerous ways to munch on them, including raw, dry roasted, candied, salted, and flavors like wasabi, cinnamon, and for all you Valentine’s Day revelers, chocolate-covered. HINT: You can get the chocolate taste without the added calories by tossing almonds with cocoa powder, or look for brands that offer them such as Emerald’s Cocoa Roasted Almonds or Planter’s Cocoa and Cinnamon variety. You might consider going the way of almond butter on crackers. In addition to the calorie count, be careful about added sugar, salt, and empty calories added to the already sweet and cute almonds. Don’t overdo. Almonds are just fine in their natural state. Just look at the blossoms from which they come. They smell so sweet.

Hey, these beauties are grown in Texas, too and they even have a Texas variety. Check it out:  Texas Mission Almond Tree

Almond Nutrition Facts

Your daily three ounces of almonds have the important vitamins and minerals you need to improve your diet and fight disease. Including 105 percent of your recommended daily allowance of vitamin E. And don't forget, they taste great, too! When you get right down to the details, it's no wonder so many people go nuts for almonds! One teeny ounce of almonds has…
Ø  12 percent of your daily allowance of protein
Ø  Absolutely no cholesterol
Ø   35 percent of your daily allowance of vitamin E, (that valuable antioxidant with so many cancer-fighting qualities).
Ø  No saturated fats; instead they are monounsaturated, also known as the "good" fat.
Ø  Minerals like magnesium, phosphorus and zinc,
Ø  Lots of healthy fiber.
Ø  Plenty of calcium and folic acid - they're in there too!

20-25 almonds (approximately one ounce) contain as much calcium as 1/4 cup of milk, a valuable tool in preventing osteoporosis.

Almonds are the best whole food source of vitamin E, in the form of alpha-tocopherol, which may help prevent cancer.

If you're pregnant, or thinking about it, almonds are a great source of the folic acid you need!

Almonds contain more magnesium than oatmeal or even spinach. Are you listening, Popeye?

Build strong bones and teeth with the phosphorus in almonds.
